Murray plays a chronic loser who joins the army and fails to find a fan for his ironic sensibilities in his by-the-book sergeant (Warren Oates). When push comes to shove, however, the smirking hero takes charge of his ragtag unit and turns them into fighting machines, albeit to the rhythm of hit songs by Manfred Mann and Sly Stone. The film is occasionally funny, but it mostly plays like any one of a dozen underachieving comedies featuring players from Saturday Night Live and SCTV. –Tom Keogh

Tony Scali (Michael Chiklis) is everything The Shield’s Vic Mackey isn’t: kind, considerate, caring. (He’s also a little heavier and has more hair.) Commissioner Scali loves his wife, his son, even his partners (but more on that later). He’s not so crazy about the crooks, but he’s always ethical in his dealings with them. It’s hard to believe the two characters are incarnated by the same guy, but the Emmy Award-winning Chiklis (Spirited Away, Fantastic Four) is one versatile actor.

Set in Upstate New York, The Commish is a throwback to the cop shows of the 1970s, when police had personal lives and gore wasn’t obligatory, but a sensitive look at social issus–and some lighthearted humor–never hurt. Not so-coincidentally, it was created by Stephen J. Cannell (The Rockford Files) along with Stephen Kronish (24). Each episode of the second season deals with a different issu, such as domestic abuse (”Escape”), suicide (”A Time to Be Born…”), and rape (”Sleep of the Just”).

So about those partners: As much as Tony loves Paulie (John Cygan), Paulie’s violent tendencies concern him. Before the end of two-part season premiere “Adventures in the Skin Trade,” those tendencies will get the best of him and Paulie will be forced to leave. He’ll be replaced by former FBI agent Cyd (Melinda McGraw). Meanwhile, Tony and Rachel (Raging Bull’s Theresa Saldana) are expecting their second child, while son David (The 4400’s Kaj-Erik Eriksen) has a crush on the precocious girl next door. Notable second season gust stars include Ray Walston (”The Witches of Eastbridge”), Pat Sajak (”The Two Faces of Ed”), and Eric McCormack (”The Ides of March”). In addition, Telly Savalas (Kojak) appears in a three-episode story arc as mob boss Nicky Collette (”The Frame,” “Family Business,” and “Out of Business”). –Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Lady and the Highwayman, produced by Lew Grade as part of a series of Barbara Cartland dramatizations in 1987, contains all the ingredients that made her uniqu style of romantic fiction so successful. The highwayman in qustion, known as Silver Blade, is actually an aristocratic outlaw played by a youthful Hugh Grant in a bouffant mullet wig. The lady is Panthea (Lysette Anthony), delicate but firm of purpose, who knows her man when she sees him. It’s Restoration England, so the frocks are fabulous. But Cartland’s pretensions to historical accuracy evaporate when she makes Charles II’s mistress, Barbara Castlemaine (Dynasty’s Emma Samms), the villainess of the piece.

From there, it’s a freewheeling ride of Robin Hood-inspired philanthropy, duplicitous cousins, and some uncomfortably fetishistic shots of the rituals and instruments of execution, although everybody is rescud in time for the romantic soft-focus finale. Full of splendidly self-indulgent performances from the likes of Claire Bloom, John Mills, and Michael York, The Lady and the Highwayman is a feast of thespian ham. Somehow, the cast triumph over the banality of the basic material. –Piers Ford

Gundam Wing (1995-96), a 49-part series in the Alternate Universe continuity, scored a hit in the U.S. when it aired on the Cartoon Network. In the year 195 A.C. (After Colony), much of humanity has emigrated to orbiting Space Colonies; those who remained on Earth are governed by the oppressive United Earth Sphere Alliance. But the real power is wielded by the sinister Romefeller Foundation, whose directors plot to control Earth and the Colonies through their puppet military entity OZ, led by Zechs Marquise and Treize Khushrenada. Five teenage pilots in Gundam mecha suits strike at Earth, hoping to aid the rebel Colonists: sullen Heero Yuy, happy-go-lucky Duo Maxwell, former circus acrobat Trowa Barton, sensitive Quatre Raberba, and icy WuFei Chang. The convoluted story line pits the Romefeller Foundation, the rebellious “Treize Faction” of OZ, the Gundam Pilots, and royal pacifist Relena Peacecraft against each other. But it’s primarily a battle between the adherents of a samurai-style code of honor and the soulless adherents of realpolitik. When the Romefeller Foundation begins manufacturing Mobile Dolls (pilotless battle robots), the Gundam pilots, Zechs, and Treize object, not because they can make the Foundation all-powerful, but because they will deprive human warriors of the singular emotions experienced through heroism in battle.

The uninitiated may have trouble following the plot: strange revelations abound (e.g., Relena discovers Zechs is her long-lost brother) and characters disappear for a dozen or more episodes, only to return when a deus ex machina is needed. But Gundam fans aren’t interested in tightly woven story lines or credible character arcs, and Gundam Wing delivers plenty of battles between the splendidly designed robots. It’s a classic confrontation between good guys with invincible weapons and soulless bad guys who can’t hit the broad side of a robot. London (Jessica Biel) instigates their breakup after sleeping around and failing to help Sid’s depression, culminating in his suicide attempt. Sid’s angst builds in the bathroom, as he gets higher, creating a tortured scenario reminiscent of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Finally, Sid faces London and starts a chaotic brawl. A side-plot involves Bateman (Jason Stathham), the coke dealer devoted to counseling Sid. Bateman soothes Sid’s pain by describing the real frustration of impotency, manifesting itself in a love for S&M clubs. With such a simplistic plot, London is as devoid of logic as the lifestyle it glamorizes, making its pointlessness ingeniously vapid. Sid’s qust for sanity is difficult to empathize with, since he’s an egotistical, drug-addled loser. Sid repeatedly qustions the existence of God between scenes of his failed relationship with London, obviously linking his heartbreak and his loss of faith. At its worst, London portrays a shallow, juvenile couple’s inability to resolve personal issus. At best, London cleverly pits cocaine’s sex appeal against the doomed fates of those who fall prey to it.–Trinie Dalton
