The Killing Kind is a disturbing psychological thriller about a mother-son relationship gone awry as the mother discovers that her son is a serial killer. In this Freudian drama, Terry (John Savage) is released from prison after a two-year stint following a rape charge, heading straight for the support of his mother, Thelma (Ann Sothern), as he relocates to her cat-infested mansion. Immediately, their odd, incestuous relationship reveals itself, as they neglect the outside world to revel in shared morbid fantasies. The first death reference occurs in a bizarre scene in which the two laugh uproariously over an elderly neighbor’s death, while Thelma flings bacon around in the kitchen. Her overprotective attitude towards Terry is developed as the motivation behind his inability to interact with women his age in a loving manner. When roommate Lori (Cindy Williams) moves in, for example, Terry spies on her undressing through a barred window, petting their cat so vigorously that he strangles it. From here, Terry’s predatorial obsessions escalate until Thelma is forced to cover for her son’s brutally twisted crimes. Terrifying moments throughout the film are conveyed through gorgeous camera work and drawn symbolic connections between phallic totems and weaponry. The best aspect of the film is its script, which is eerily psychotic and authentic. An added bonus on this DVD is an interview with Harrington recalling highlights in his career. The release of The Killing Kind serves as a tribute to this auteur’s recent death, which hopefully will encourage new viewers to investigate Harrington’s fascinating, horrific oeuvre. –Trinie Dalton

When released in December 2000, Thirteen Days was pummeled for taking liberties with the facts of the Cuban missile crisis and smothering its compelling drama with phony Boston accents by its primary stars. More tolerant critics hailed it as one of the year’s best films, and that’s the opinion to believe for anyone who enjoys taut, intelligent political thrillers. For those too young to relate directly to the timeless urgency of the crisis that played out over 13 days in October 1962, Thirteen Days joins the classic TV treatment The Missiles of October (1973) as an intense and thought-provoking study of leadership under pressure.

The film (and costar-coproducer Kevin Costner) drew criticism for fictionally enhancing the White House role of presidential aide Kenneth O’Donnell, but while Costner’s Boston accent may be grating, his fine performance as O’Donnell offers expert witness to the crisis, its nerve-wracking escalation, and the efforts of John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Culp) to negotiate a peaceful settlement with Russia. While Soviet missiles approach operational status in Cuba, director Roger Donaldson (who directed Costner in No Way Out) cuts to exciting U.S. Navy flights over the missile site, ramping up the tension that history itself provided. Donaldson’s occasional use of black and white is self-consciously distracting, and he’s further guilty of allowing a shrillness (along with repetitive, ominous shots of nuclear explosions) to invade the urgency of David Self’s screenplay. Still, as Hollywood history lessons go, Thirteen Days is riveting stuff. You may find yourself wondering what might happen if reality presented a repeat scenario under less intelligent leadership. –Jeff Shannon

Gina Prince-Bythewood, a former college athlete, puts a spin on this one-on-one tale of Love and Basketball. Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man) is the fiercely driven, hot-tempered Monica, a tomboy who gives her all for basketball. Omar Epps (The Mod Squad) is Quincy, an NBA player’s son who has pro dreams of his own. Next-door neighbors since first grade, they start as rivals (she flabbergasts the boy by outplaying him in a game of driveway pickup) and age into best friends and lovers. The romantic complications follow a familiar game plan, but the film throws a fascinating spotlight onto the contrast between men’s and women’s basketball. While Quincy plays college ball on huge courts to cheering, sold-out crowds, we see Monica’s sweat, tears, and sheer physical dedication in front of tiny audiences in small gyms and second-rate auditoriums.

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica’s prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It’s a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you’d never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy’s and opens our eyes to her uniqu challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica’s harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy’s philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. –Sean Axmaker
